Remicade is an immune-suppressing prescription medication used for treating various ailments including Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis.  It is marketed by Centocor, Inc., a division of Johnson and Johnson.

It is a monoclonal antibody that specifically targets and binds to TNF-a (tumor necrosis factor alpha) on the cell membrane and in the blood. TNF is a small protein that has a significant role in the regulation of the immune system.

Overproduction of TNF-a is believed to be a cause of rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's Disease. By blocking the action of TNF-alpha, Remicade reduces the inflammation and its accompanying signs and symptoms.

Use of Remicade may decrease a user’s ability to fight an infection. This can lead to serious medical conditions.

The FDA has issued a series of warnings and now requires the drug to carry a special "black box warning" on its label, a heightened warning for potentially dangerous drugs.

Remicade has been linked to many different health risks; some of which include:

  • Jaundice
  • Tuberculosis
  • Histoplasmosis
  • Invasive fungal infections
  • Lymphoma
  • Seizures
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Heart Failure
  • Listeriosis
