*** SPINAL CORD ACCIDENTS, INJURIES & DEATHS ***

According to data obtained and analyzed by the National Spinal Cord Injuries Association, present estimates conclude that the yearly incidence of spinal cord injuries in the United States is roughly 40 cases per one-million of the overall population - which translates to approximately 2,000 new cases every year.

Furthermore, there are estimated to be between a quarter-of-a-million and 300,000 American citizens whose lives are today significantly affected by major spinal cord injuries.

Spinal cord injuries may have devastating and long-lasting effects on the person concerned, and can include - but may not be limited to - the following:

  • Partial or complete paralysis
  • A broken back
  • Loss of motor-functions
  • Fractures of the spine
  • An inability to engage in sexual activity
  • Paraplegia
  • Quadriplegia
  • Loss of ability to control bowel movements

On the issue of medical treatment that may be required by those specifically affected by spinal cord injuries, the financial effects may be almost as devastating as the physical effects.

For example, for those in a definitively paraplegic state, first-year health-care costs and related expenses may be in the region of $280,000 to $300,000, with subsequent, annual costs in the region of $30,000.

Spinal cord injuries may occur as a result of a variety of situations, including taking part in fast-paced sports and games, such as football and baseball; vehicular accidents; shootings; aviation accidents; work-related incidents; and accidental falls.

Significantly, almost 50 per cent of all such spinal cord injuries that occur each year are vehicular in nature.

In many such cases, the victims are completely innocent: drunk-drivers, reckless and inexperienced drivers, faulty traffic-lights, and manufacturing defects in vehicles (including defective brakes and seat-belts) have all contributed significantly to the increasing incidences of spinal cord injuries.
