Marketed as Seroquel, Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic that is chiefly used in the management of schizophrenia and bipolar-I disorder. Some health-care professionals, however, have prescribed Seroquel for various “off-label” conditions, including anxiety, insomnia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcoholism, and bipolar depression.

Quetiapine has many side effects, the most commonly reported ones including: sedation, headache, dry mouth, weight gain, and dizziness.

Much more serious, and possibly fatal, side effects include a risk of developing tardive dyskinesia: an incurable neurological disorder that is characterized by repetitive, involuntary, purposeless movements. Specific aspects of the disorder can include grimacing, tongue protrusion, lip smacking, puckering and pursing of the lips, and rapid eye blinking. Rapid movements of the patient’s limbs may also occur.

Moreover, patients prescribed Seroquel can develop the rare, but life-threatening, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, which can be characterized by such symptoms as confused or altered consciousness, potentially serious changes in blood-pressure levels, rigid muscles, kidney problems, and autonomic imbalance.

As with other certain atypical anti-psychotics, evidence suggests a link between the drug and the development of diabetes. Diabetic coma can result from imbalances in blood sugar levels (such as abnormally low levels of sugar in the blood), and death can result in the most serious and tragic cases.
