A “paramagnetic metal ion,” Gadolinium is a key component of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) process.

It assists in providing good quality imagery of both tissue and organs, such as the brain and the kidneys.

It can also be utilized in Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), which, unlike MRI, is designed to seek out any evidence of heart disease, stroke, and serious vascular issues.

Although the use of Gadolinium is approved by the Food and Drug Administration in situations involving MRI, it is not approved for use in MRA.

Serious side-effects have been reported in patients who have been exposed to Gadolinium.

A January 2006 paper that was published in Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation, revealed the experiences of a number of patients who were suffering from serious kidney failure, and who went on to develop a seldom-seen, but life-threatening, condition known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis/Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF/NFD).

Similarly, in May 2006, additional corroborative data was published in a press release issued by the Danish Medicines Agency. The collective concern noted was that all of the patients who had developed NSF/NFD had – only several weeks to several months earlier – been specifically exposed to Gadolinium-enhanced MRA procedures.

The effects of NSF/NFD are devastating, and may include the thickening of skin, which can result in the inability of the patient to properly bend joints, extend joints, and even walk.

NSF/NFD can also seriously affect the lung-vessels and the diaphragm. And, as a condition that is progressive, it can prove to be fatal.
