Originally approved for use in the United States in 1997, Baycol was a member of a group of drugs known as statins that were specifically formulated to lower elevated levels of cholesterol in those to whom they were prescribed. Baycol worked by systematically blocking an enzyme in the human body involved in the synthesis of cholesterol.

Although Baycol proved to be an effective treatment for those suffering from high levels of cholesterol, some users of Baycol suffered adverse side-effects - including serious muscular injuries, renal failure, and even death.

As a result, in August 2001, the Food and Drug Administration released a statement in which it was revealed that Bayer Pharmaceutical Division was taking steps to begin completely withdraw its product, following widespread publicity given to accounts of at least 30 U.S.-based fatalities in those who had been taking the drug.

The deaths at issue resulted from a condition known as fatal rhabdomyolysis, which occurs when a large percentage of the body’s skeletal muscles die. The condition subsequently leads to the release of substantial amounts of muscle protein into the patient’s bloodstream – which can then become trapped in the kidneys and result in potentially fatal kidney failure.
