Accutane®  Pulled From U.S. Market: California, Texas, & Florida  Attorneys / Lawyers Now Reviewing Nationwide Potential Accutane® Claims

Accutane®  (also known as isotretinoin) has been widely prescribed as a treatment for nodular, pustular acne which has not responded to oral antibiotics.  It is estimated at least 13 million people have used the drug.  Accutane®  is a derivative of vitamin A and works by reducing the skin’s production of oil.  The drug has worked well in curing breakouts of severe cystic acne.  However, there are serious side effects, including Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Inflammatory Bowl Disease refers to two diseases which cause inflammation of the intestines: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. While the diseases have some common features, there are important differences.

Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the large intestine or colon, that includes ulcers or open sores in the colon. The main symptom of active disease is constant diarrhea mixed with blood.  Symptoms of ulcerative colitis may diminish on their own, but typically require medication.

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory disease of the intestines which may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from anus to mouth.  The primary symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting or weight loss.

Additional Side Effects are:
  • Birth Defects
  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Premature Closure of Growth Plates
  • Organ Damage
  • Optic Neuritis
  • Central Nervous System Injuries
  • Bone and Muscle Loss
  • Cardiovascular Injuries
  • Liver and Kidney Damage
  • Pancreatitis
  • Immune System Disorder
  • Lupus
  • Hearing and Vision Damage
  • Thyroid Disorders
  • Suicidal Behavior
