PDF E-mail

The Fox Law Firm is Reviewing Potential Dilantin® Claims.

The anti-epileptic, anti-convulsant drug Dilantin® poses potential risk for Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS), a devastating and sometimes fatal allergic disorder.

There was a Dilantin® (Phenytoin) alert released by the FDA in the fall of 2008, stating that the drug is currently being investigated for increased risk of serious drug reactions affecting the skin, such as Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrosis (TEN).

Side Effects of Dilantin®

One of the most serious side-effects is the Stevens Johnson allergic skin reaction (SJS), suffered by an estimated one-in-ten-thousand people who take the drug.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS)

Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a rare allergic disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. It is an emergency condition usually requiring hospitalization. Recovery can take weeks to months, depending on the severity of the condition, with the survival of the patient linked to how much of the skin and mucous membrane are affected.

Toxic Epidermal Necrosis (TEN)

Toxic Epidermal Necrosis (TEN) is considered to be the more severe form of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS). Toxic Epidermal Necrosis (TEN) has a reported fatality rate of thirty to forty percent of patients diagnosed with the disorder.

Stevens Johnson Syndrome Symptoms

• Influenza-like; upper respiratory infection and fever
• Blistering of mucous membranes
• Rash, appearing in patches

Progression of Disease

• Dermal layer fills with fluid
• Skin peels off in large sheets
• Mouth may become blistered and eroded
• Eyes become swollen and ulcerated; blindness may occur
• Death

If you or a loved one have taken Dilantin® and have experienced any of these symptoms, please contact us immediately for a free consultation.

Please consult with your physician before you stop taking any medications, including Dilantin®.

About Dilantin®

Dilantin® is currently produced by Pfizer, Inc. It was discovered in 1938, when the chemical compound diphenylhydantoin failed to be an effective sedative but was discovered to have seizure-preventing properties. It was then marketed as Dilantin®, and it is still a major drug in epilepsy treatment today, with the generic name of Phenytoin.
