Benzene is an organic chemical compound, and is widely used throughout the entire United States. Currently, it ranks among the Top-20 chemicals for production volume.

Numerous industries utilize Benzene in the production of plastics, resins, and nylon and synthetic fibers.

In addition, Benzene is used to produce a variety of lubricants, rubbers, dyes, detergents, drugs, and pesticides.

Both short-term and long-term exposure to Benzene can lead to extremely serious effects on the physical health of a person.

Outside-air, for example, can contain low levels of Benzene derived from tobacco smoke, fumes accumulated at gas stations, the transfer of gasoline, exhausts from motor vehicles, and industrial emissions.

Vapors from products that contain Benzene are widespread, and can also include glue, paint, furniture wax, and various detergents.

All of the above may be considered potential sources of exposure.

The short-term breathing of high-levels of Benzene may result in death; while being exposed to lower levels may directly lead to symptoms including confusion, tremors, unconsciousness, dizziness, drowsiness, intense headaches, tremors, and elevated hear-rate.

Ingesting food and drink that contains elevated levels of Benzene can cause nausea, sickness and vomiting, irritation of the stomach, dizziness, sleepiness, convulsions, and even death.

Without doubt, the most serious effects of Benzene exposure on the human-body result from chronic exposure via the blood. It has been demonstrated that Benzene can seriously damage bone-marrow, and may cause a potentially fatal decrease in the patient’s red blood cells – one result of which is extreme anemia.

In addition, Benzene can result in excessive bleeding; it may depress the immune system; and it can increase the risk of severe bodily infection.

Benzene has also been shown to cause leukemia, and is linked with other blood cancers, and pre-cancers of the blood. It may also lead to strand-breaks in DNA, and cause serious, irreversible chromosome damage in the patient.
