Radiation Treatment for Mesothelioma

PDF E-mail

One of the methods of Mesothelioma treatment is radiation therapy. Radiation therapy involves the use of high-energy radiation to destroy cancer cells. Radiation therapy is used alone or sometimes in combination with chemotherapy depending on the health status of the patient. Often, radiation therapy is also used to prevent the spread of cancer cells after procedures such as biopsies and chest tube insertions.

The radiation oncologist, or physician who treats cancer with radiation, will determine whether you will need internal or external radiation or a combination of both. Internal radiation, known as brachytherapy uses radioactive isotopes. The isotopes are placed inside the body near the tumor. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy or IMRT uses a computer to direct radiation to the tumor. Using a computer decreases the possibility radiation affecting healthy tissues. These external methods of radiation are known as external-beam radiation therapy.
